TeleTracking - Automated Patient Flow System

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA)

Automated Patient Flow System Eliminates Diversions for Children in Need of Specialty Care

Despite being one of America’s largest children's hospitals, CHOA had to divert critical cases to other institutions due to the volume of patients coming in. After employing our automated solutions, CHOA has been able to treat nearly 14,000 additional children since 2008.

TeleTracking Case Study - Regions Hospital

Regions Hospital

TeleTracking technology used to address patient flow issues at Regions Hospital

It was determined that patient flow was impeded by the productivity level of the hospital’s 27 transporters, who were drastically under utilized by other departments. As a result of this inactivity, transporters were prone to returning to the break room, which meant they were rarely in proximity of a new job.

In the News: Baptist Health Care’s new patient placement system saves time, improves workflow and has saved lives

Memphis Medical News by: Beth Simkanin Forty-six minutes was just enough time to save the life of a new mother. That’s the amount of time it took for her to be transported from a Baptist Memorial Health Care regional hospital emergency department to the intensive care unit at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Memphis, after she suffered a cardiac arrest following an emergency Cesarean section due to fetal distress. Upon her arrival, specialists were able to save her life. A physician at the regional facility made one phone call to the Baptist Patient Placement Center (BPPC) and the nurses there arranged transportation for the patient, had a bed secured and contacted on-call specialists in a matter of minutes. “The nurse who took the call stayed on the phone the entire time with the paramedic while the patient was transported,” said Deborah Hall, director of the BPPC. “This was not just about getting a patient a bed, it was about this mother living to see her new baby.” In just a little over a year, Baptist has made the lives of patients, physicians and hospital staff easier by implementing the BPPC, which creates efficiencies, streamlines workflow throughout the hospital system and ultimately makes it easier for medical professionals to save lives. The BPPC, which is staffed with registered nurses ranging in acute and emergency experience from seven to 39 years, tracks the status and manages all 2,700 hospital beds in the Baptist system and helps transfer and admit patients all from one location. In addition, nurses can dispatch air travel for a critical case, monitor calls, track calls, transfer volume and find capacity for a patient all from one location. This is accomplished via a series of monitors using a software system called TeleTracking. To read more of this article, click here.

In the News: How EHRs, Interoperability and Workflow are Helping (and Hurting) Healthcare

Health IT Outcomes by John Oncea TeleTracking President Michael Gallup is leading his company’s transformation from a patient flow automation company to a real-time, automated operations management provider for healthcare organizations. Driving this transformation is his aptitude for identifying the needs of healthcare organizations across the continuum of care and his ability to unify TeleTracking’s various business components to provide broad operational efficiencies, cost savings, and revenue generation as a counterbalance to healthcare reform cutbacks. Gallup took time recently to talk with Health IT Outcomes about EHRs, interoperability, and workflows and how these three hot-button topics are improving outcomes and, at the same time, hindering healthcare. In the News: How Florida’s Health First Has Leveraged Real-Time Data to Improve Hospital Operations

Healthcare Informatics by Rajiv Leventhal Amid an urgent push to use staff and existing beds more efficiently, and capture more incoming patients, hospital and health system executives are continuously looking to improve hospital operations by using real-time data. As such, Health First is using Lean methods to improve efficiencies in various departments. The integrated delivery network, headquartered in Rockledge, Fla., has 900 beds across four hospitals, a large multi-specialty medical group, outpatient and wellness services, and health insurance plans. Specifically, the patient care organization uses technology from Pittsburgh, Pa.-based TeleTracking to monitor daily hospital functions in real time and capture performance data on pull time—the length of time it takes for patients to occupy assigned beds—number of transfers, and total length of stay, as well as turnaround time for all ancillary support services, with the goal of eliminating wasted time and resources. Initially, the idea was to find an environmental services solution for bed cleaning, but then Health First operational leaders started looking at the TeleTracking software for bed placement and transport. Then came the ability to do predictive modeling, says Lisa Maples, director of centralized patient logistics at Health First. To read more of this article, click here.

In the News: Internet of Things Transforms Health Facility Operations

Hospitals leverage data to improve building management and patient care. Health Facilities Management by Amy Eagle An auto-discharge process at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center begins when staff remove patients’ tracking bracelets and drop them into a box as they leave the unit, triggering an alert to environmental services staff. Geisinger Health System, Danville, Pa., uses real-time locating system (RTLS) technology by TeleTracking Technologies Inc., Pittsburgh, to track equipment, patients and staff in the organization’s facilities to improve workflow and patient outcomes. RTLS sensors and tags, provided by CenTrak, Newtown, Pa., placed on objects, patient wristbands and employee badges identify the location of each, enabling staff members to find, for example, the nearest piece of needed equipment or a specific patient who is ready for transport. The staff awareness and patient visibility components of the system add valuable information, says Seth Hostetler, lead process engineer, care support services, Geisinger. The health system is using this information to examine patient, staff and equipment flows, with the aim of process improvement. An emergency department (ED) study at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., linked nurse movement with patient information in the hospital’s EHR, allowing the health system to consider questions like, “If nurses always go to a supply closet to support patients with bone fractures, could these patients’ treatments be streamlined by pre-stocking certain supplies in an exam room?” To read more of this article, click here.

In the News: TeleTracking Employs a Long View to Shape Building Blocks of Change

Smart Business by Jayne Gest TeleTracking Technologies Inc. celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and for the company’s owner, Michael Zamagias, that means one quarter has been completed. That viewpoint was strange to President Michael Gallup when he first joined the business five years ago. He was used to publicly traded companies, where the 90-day quarter’s results impacted whether or not you’d be able to execute your strategy as originally planned. Gallup says he’s learned how to focus on the mission and make the right decisions — and not focus on the tactics and results of each quarter. “I can think more about the employees than I ever have; I can care more about their life and their well-being,” he says. “I can care more about our clients, and it’s been a massive change for me in my leadership style.” He says he wouldn’t go back to a management model that requires you to shift your strategy because of a bad quarter or two. Two or three data points don’t necessarily make a trend. “Is the bullet headed toward the center of the target, but it’s just moving slower than we thought, or is the bullet not even heading for the target? That’s how we view it,” Gallup says. If the bullet is heading for the target slower than you thought, an entrepreneurial-backed company like TeleTracking will still press forward. “We are going to do the right thing for our clients; the right things for our employees; and we’re going to try to do that as best as we can over a long time period,” he says. That long view affects everything TeleTracking and its more than 350 employees do, including building new products as it migrates from a point solution provider to a provider focused on driving customer outcomes.
