Patient flow management through the emergency department can be a challenging task, but some health IT help and executive support produced major results for Health First of Florida. Health IT Analytics By Jennifer Bresnick on May 10, 2016 The emergency department can often be a busy, hectic, stressful place for both patients and their providers.  Neither can know in advance what will happen when they walk through the doors: who they will see, how long it will take, if a hospital admission is required, or if a quick prescription and a primary care follow-up will do. For patients, the anxiety of visiting the emergency department can be compounded when they are told they need to be admitted but have to wait hours for a bed on the right floor upstairs.  For staff members, the process of pushing an admission request through the system can be convoluted, time consuming, and full of frustrating delays. At Health First, an integrated delivery network serving Central Florida, Director of Centralized Patient Logistics Lisa Maples and her team knew that there were some significant opportunities to untangle the admissions process and improve the speed and simplicity of patient flow through the system. By enhancing the organization’s reliance on data analytics and health IT tools to improve patient flow management, Health First was able to achieve remarkable results, including 33,000 fewer hours of waiting time in the emergency department, a 12.9 percent reduction in average costs per discharge, and a 19 percent reduction in average length of stay. A real-life Marauder’s Map for the health system By: Valerie Neff Newitt, Executive Insight What hospital leader wouldn’t love a facility-specific Marauder’s Map – a magical document (found in Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry) showing every room, hallway and secret passageway, as well as what is hidden within – objects or people.  It would be a certain shortcut to process improvement.  Well, guess what?  Some hospitals have them – in the form of real-time locating systems (RTLS). Patient Flow Pioneers – How the patient experience has changed in TeleTracking’s first 25 years. Written by Max Green | Becker’s Hospital Review If you plug the search term “patient access” into Google Trends, the system will generate a graph that looks like a hockey stick. In a sense, the uptick in searches for the term patient access also correlates with TeleTracking’s 25-year journey as a patient flow solutions organization, says Kris Kaneta, vice president of marketing for the company. There is a slow rise for decades and then a sharper increase as hospitals and health systems began to focus on driving value by improving the patient experience. “When TeleTracking started 25 years ago, the whole notion of patient flow as a concept didn’t really exist,” Mr. Kaneta says. “In the first part of the 2000s, [healthcare research firm] KLAS assessed a category called ‘bed management,’ which didn’t become ‘patient flow’ until 2011.” TeleTracking has secured the No. 1 position in KLAS’ patient flow category in the five years since its inception. But Mr. Kaneta sees the organization’s most important accomplishment is contributing to a healthcare environment where the concept of patient flow is more visible. It may not have broad impact yet, but providers are beginning to understand the important role that flow plays in patient experience, caregiver experience and a host of other factors. In early February, NewYork-Presbyterian launched its Patient Placement Operations Center, a command center-style hub designed in partnership with TeleTracking to streamline patient flow. Initiatives like this one quickly produce results that show the benefits health systems can experience from better managing patient flow, says Mike Gallup, president of TeleTracking. In the News: Patient tracking to help NYC hospital boost efficiency

By: Joseph Goedert It’s the patient-tracking equivalent of an air traffic control center. That’s how Holly Meisner, vice president of patient access, describes the new Patient Placement Operations Center (PPOC) at the Columbia campus of New York-Presbyterian Hospital. The center was co-developed with TeleTracking, the vendor that supplies the six-hospital system with its existing patient flow system. The new PPOC at Columbia has a bank of large screens displaying real-time data from TeleTracking. PPOC measures established metrics for moving patients through the hospital by time-stamping emergency department throughput (for example, how long it takes for a patient to see a doctor or other clinician. A decision to admit a patient creates a bed request from the ER, and the system can record when a bed is assigned and when the bed is occupied, as well as how long it takes nursing to move a patient to an inpatient bed. In the News: New York-Presbyterian launches centralized system, automates patient data

Touted as first of its kind, Patient Placement Operations Center is set to boost patient experience, patient flow capabilities. By Jessica Davis February 10, 2016 New York-Presbyterian has deployed its Patient Placement Operations Center, designed to support the hospital’s existing TeleTracking system. PPOC integrates NYP’s advanced TeleTracking system with automated patient flow data and real-time patient information to efficiently place patients in the right departments for a smoother admission and placement process. TeleTracking was in place within NYP for about five years and was built by senior leadership to combat issues with patient flow among its campuses, which include six main campuses in Manhattan, one behavioral health center in Westchester and two medical centers, among others.
